Patient Spotlight: Bill R. – From Cane to Gold Medal

By: Dr. Ticha Green, PT, DPT

We’re proud to spotlight Bill, a patient who proves that age—and even major surgery—doesn’t have to slow you down. After a total hip replacement, Bill didn’t just return to his daily activities… he returned to the podium.

Before starting physical therapy, Bill was dealing with moderate to severe osteoarthritis in his right hip. The pain forced him to step away from many of the activities he loved. He stopped cross-country skiing, cut back on pickleball, and found himself hiking less. Even time with his grandkids became more difficult, as he experienced discomfort during play and everyday movement.

Following surgery, Bill recalls a defining moment at his 6-week post-op appointment. Sitting in the waiting room surrounded by others using walkers and canes—and needing one himself—he felt discouraged. As someone who had always been active, he wasn’t sure what his recovery would look like.

That’s when physical therapy became a turning point.

Working with Ticha, Bill found a collaborative and empowering experience. Each session was interactive—he brought questions, and together they worked through them. Ticha provided clear explanations of body mechanics and continually adjusted his personalized exercise program to match his progress.

A key focus was correcting compensations that had developed from years of hip pain. By learning how to properly activate his glutes and move more efficiently, Bill was able to reduce strain on other areas of his body, including his back, knee, and thigh. With a combination of expert guidance, consistency, and a light-hearted but motivating approach, Bill stayed committed to his recovery.

Today, Bill feels like himself again—strong, capable, and athletic.

He returned to cross-country skiing and completed a six-day hiking trip through England’s Cotswold District with his wife. He and his pickleball partner not only qualified for the national championship tournament—they went on to win a gold medal in the 65+ division.

Perhaps most importantly, Bill is back to enjoying everyday life. He babysits his grandkids regularly, plays with them on the floor, and—just as importantly—gets back up with ease.

When asked what he would tell others considering physical therapy, Bill doesn’t hesitate:

“I definitely encourage someone who has pain or feels limited to pursue physical therapy. Don’t just take ibuprofen or give up activities you like. A good physical therapist can identify the cause and help you move better.”

Bill’s journey is a powerful reminder that recovery doesn’t have to mean limitation. With the right support and dedication, it can be the beginning of something even stronger.

We’re honored to have been part of Bill’s journey and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next.
