Who would benefit from a bike fit?
The short answer is everyone who rides a bike whether it be for recreational purposes, commuting, or racing. Cycling is a very repetitive low impact form of physical activity, for that reason it has numerous health benefits for the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Due to the repetitive nature of cycling there are increased risk factors for overuse injuries to the musculoskeletal system. If the saddle, handlebars, or cleats are improperly positioned, joints and soft tissues can be strained beyond their tolerances and injury can occur. Furthermore our pedaling and postural techniques can also contribute to pathological biomechanics and can set tissues up to fail.
Common overuse injuries from a poor bike fit and technique include:
- Tendinopathies of the lower extremity affecting the hip, knee, and ankle
- Low back strain
- Muscle strains
- Femoral acetabular impingement syndrome
- Patellofemoral tracking disorders
- Cervical radiculopathy
- Ulnar and median neuropathies
- Urinary incontinence
- Pelvic neuropathies
- Sexual dysfunction
- Postural dysfunction off the bike
In addition a poor bike fit can also affect mechanical efficiency, robbing you of valuable wattage. Cycling should be a fun and enjoyable part of living an active, healthy lifestyle, so having a proper fit is a critical component for getting the most out of every ride.
What makes a bike fitting at Stride Physio different?
As physical therapists we are in the business of optimizing human movement and the body is quite the complex machine. At its core, the bicycle is a pretty simple machine when compared to the human body. A keen sense of understanding is required in both the human body and the bicycle to facilitate an optimal outcome.
Scott McClave is Stride’s resident bike fit expert. Prior to becoming a physical therapist Scott spent over six years working as a bicycle mechanic. He has devoted a majority of his practice as a physical therapist to treating cyclists of all disciplines and ability levels ranging from first time cyclists to world class athletes. He wrote for the internationally published Mountain Bike Action Magazine and serves as a board member for Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance. With a keen attention to detail on the mechanical and body side of the equation, rest assured that Scott will work to get you dialed in on and off the bike.
Self Pay Bike Fitting Rates
While we don’t charge differently for a Road, Mountain, Cross or Aero bikes. It is important to note that component complexity on certain bikes may require more time to make the appropriate adjustments. For sessions booked on the hour the following rates apply.
- Initial session (1hr) $200
- Follow-up (1hr) $160
Due to the complex component nature of Aero and Tri bikes or if you have multiple bikes we would suggest booking in a 2 hour time slot. A 2 hour time slot is also ideal for clients who would like more time for consultative and coaching work.
- Consecutive 2hr session is $325
Bike fitting is a unique process with a physical therapist and may require multiple visits to achieve your desired cycling goals. On average our clients reach their bike fit goals in 1-3 sessions. Due to the complexity of Aero and Tri specific bikes, you should expect having at least one additional follow-up.

Does insurance cover “Bike Fitting”?
Bike fitting is classified as a health and wellness visit which is the financial responsibility of the client. However, if the bike fit is determined medically necessary by a healthcare professional you may use your health insurance or HSA/FSA account to cover a bike fit. In order to determine medical necessity your insurance company may require a prior physical therapy evaluation or a signed referral from an MD. Further evaluation by a physical therapist will be required to determine if current injury or pathology is directly related to cycling. Please call or email us for more information.
Cycling induced injury vs. cycling pain syndrome:
An cycling induced injury may be the culmination of many factors related to cycling including: improper bike fit, poor pedaling technique, postural deficiencies on the bike, and a significant increase in milage or intensity. A cycling induced injury will cause pain and disability off the bike that can affect your moving around and activities off the bike. As cycling is a very repetitive sport, cycling induced injuries do happen and can be rather aggravating to work through. This is why we recommend having a bike fit with a licensed physical therapist to prevent this from becoming a reality. The reach demonstrates that proper bike fit can reduce the prevalence and frequency of cycling induced injuries.
A cycling induced pain syndrome can be a precursor to an injury however there is a distinct difference. A pain syndrome may begin shortly after a ride begins or take several hours on the bike to provoke. The key difference is that the the symptoms resolve themselves after rather quickly after a bike ride and do not affect your ability to move around or activities off the bike. These cases are harder to prove from a medical necessity perspective as symptoms are typically difficult and consistently reproduced off the bike. Insurance typically will not cover a pain syndrome as it is not affecting your activities of daily living and you place this into the non-medically necessity category.
